Last night was the finale of America’s Next Top Model, and as I had some time to kill before Top Chef came on, I watched. Now I normally don’t watch America’s Next Top Model much, basically because it seems to promote these stick-thin, sickly looking girls and that is not my thing, so when I noticed that Whitney was still around, I decided to watch.
My hopes and dreams were realized last night when Whitney, what they called the plus-sized or full-figured model won America’s Next Top Model. I was so happy, after years of the sick looking girls it was time for someone better!
This is a wonderful picture of Whitney and I think she is beautiful.
Now, I have a problem with calling her plus-sized (and they did change that to full-figured in the show) because she is nowhere near a plus size. She is probably a size 10-12, which is actually the average size of must american’s, plus-size is a 20 and above, so this is not a plus-sized girl, this is a normal, healthy girl. I also have a problem with calling her full-figured, because to most people that is the same of plus-sized, and she is not. I mean think about Marilyn Monroe, one of the icons of beauty was actually a size 14!
As a mother of two daughters, who at this time are both thin, it matters to me the people that we promote as icons, and figures of beauty. I was so excited to watch Marissa on Dancing with the Stars get to the semi-finals, because she wasn’t your usual size two model dancing. I am more excited to see Whitney as Top Model, because she has the chance to impact the modeling world more, and change that stereotype that you have to be stick-thin and sickly to be a model. That hasn’t always been the case, for years models were not that thin, but somehow we changed our thinking and I feel it damages our daughters to think they all have to look like a Barbie-doll to be pretty or beautiful.
Congrats to Whitney and I hope to see you on the covers of magazines everywere!
