A Touch of Grace is the Third book in the Daughter’s Of Blessing Series by Lauraine Snelling.
Grace, born deaf, and a twin, has always been happy in her life in Blessing, while her twin Sophie wanted to travel and see the world, Grace was happy to remain close to family and in Blessing. The arrival of Jonathan Gould from the big city for the summer, and the knowledge that the boy she thought she was in love with was not in love with her, makes her rethink her ideals, and the chance to learn in the big city, is it worth the risk?
Lauranie Snelling started this story in the Red River of the North Series, with the travels and life of Grace’s aunt Ingborg and her mother, Karen. In one of the books in the first series we are treated to the birth of thetwins, Sophie and Grace, and then later on in the book the knowledge that Grace is deaf. This leads Karen to learn all she can about teaching her daughter and before you know it, she opens her home as a school for the deaf. Now I remind you that this is all set in the late 1800’s so, a school for the deaf is unquie. Grace grows up and becomes a wonderful teacher in the school with her mother.
In the very first book of the original series, Ingeborg mets David Gould, and a lasting friendship will form that we find knowledge of throughout all the books in a number of ways. Mr Gould is a wealthy businessman in New York City, but he has an admiration to the Borklunds and their ways in the wilds of North Dakota. In this book, he sends his second oldest son to work on the farm with the Borklundes for the summer. He feels his son needs to learn the value of honest work, yet I doubt he ever thought his son would learn the lessons as well as he does.
Jonathan falls for Grace and wants to take care of her and protect her, and yet at the same time give her the world, so he asks his father to look into a renowed School for the deaf in the city, and then encourages Grace to come to the city with him to learn the newest things in teaching the deaf, and in the end Grace goes, if only for her family.
Lauraine does a wonderful job of pulling you into the time period of the story and also makes you feel for and understand the work ethic and faith of the people of Blessing, without being preachy. It is a wonderful story and I love the books, as you can tell by my reading all three series.
The next book is Rebecca’s Reward and is due out 9/1/08. I am so looking forward to that book coming out, which of course I will tell you all about once I get it read.
As is my habit with books that I have read, I tend to list them on EBay or at PaperBackSwap.com. This book, since it was brand new, and I bought it new, I listed it on Ebay to recoup a little of the money I paid for it, and as of today 5/7/08 it is SOLD! Thank you EBay!!
